Super Sensory Snacks
Ever tried explaining to a child why crunchy feels different to squishy — and why that matters for how they feel? That's exactly what Super Sensory Snacks is all about.
What is Super Sensory Snacks?
Super Sensory Snacks is one of our newest community projects, made possible thanks to funding from Tesco Stronger Starts, delivered in partnership with Groundwork UK.
The project takes children through all 8 senses — not just the five we all learned about at school (sight, sound, smell, taste and touch), but the three "hidden" senses too: proprioception (body awareness), the vestibular sense (balance and movement), and interoception (the internal signals that tell us we're hungry, full, tired, or feeling something big). Understanding all eight is at the heart of how we help children regulate — it's the same thinking behind our sensory regulation training for schools.
Every child who took part got their own snack pack to explore hands-on, while we talked through the regulatory properties of different foods — why some things soothe us, why some wake us up, and why a child reaching for a particular texture isn't "being fussy"; it's their body telling them something.
And because regulation doesn't stop at the school gate, every family went home with snacks to try together — a small, simple way to carry on the conversation around the kitchen table.
Why it matters
For children with additional learning needs or who've experienced trauma, the world can feel like too much or not enough — too loud, too bright, too fast, or strangely numb. Food is one of the easiest, most everyday ways into sensory regulation, because every family already has it in their lives. Super Sensory Snacks gives children the language and the confidence to understand their own bodies a bit better — and gives parents and carers some simple tools to keep that going at home.
Where we ran it
We delivered Super Sensory Snacks at Cadle Primary School in Fforestfach, Swansea — diolch o galon to the staff and children there for having us.
